Nutrient Recycling Innovation with Carbon Removal
Enhancing the effectiveness of nutrient recycling is essential for building resilience in the food system and advancing sustainable food production.
Developing solutions for nutrient recovery
In addition to advisory activities, 3E Energy is actively involved in the development of nutrient recycling solutions. Nutrient recycling plays an important role in improving resource efficiency, reducing dependency on finite resources, and supporting sustainable agriculture and food systems. Nutrients are available in organic side streams, usually waste.
From concept to implementation
Developing practical nutrient recovery solutions requires understanding technical performance, economics, logistics, environmental impacts, and operational requirements.
3E Energy participates in the development and evaluation of nutrient recycling concepts at pilot scale.
The objective is to create practical and scalable solutions that contribute to more sustainable resource management.
The role of optimization
Resource systems often involve multiple and sometimes competing objectives.
To support decision-making and concept development, nutrient recycling activities may utilize mathematical optimization approaches that help identify efficient system configurations and processing pathways.
This enables the evaluation of alternatives under different technical and economic conditions
Looking ahead
The growing emphasis on circular economy, resource security, and sustainable food production creates increasing interest in nutrient recovery solutions.
3E Energy seeks to contribute to the development of practical approaches that support these broader sustainability objectives.

Carbon removal solution development with a partner company
Long-term climate targets require both emissions reductions and the development of reliable carbon removal approaches. In collaboration with Climate Analytics Finland, 3E Energy supports the development of certification schemes that facilitate the wider adoption and market acceptance of organic fertilizers. Climate Analytics Finland is developing robust methodologies, transparent assessment approaches, and credible monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) frameworks to ensure the reliability and integrity of the certification process. This activity is becoming important as EU policy places greater emphasis on carbon removals. Interest in carbon removal approaches is increasing rapidly among policymakers, industry, and researchers. Biological systems offer opportunities for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere while supporting broader environmental objectives. Applying organic fertilizers can help return carbon to the soil and enhance soil carbon sequestration. 3E Energy was also part of EIT Food Test Farms 2025 program. |
